Safety and Health

Gloves should always be worn when handling wildlife traps or equipment.

Materials and Equipment

  • gloves
  • impact gun
  • appropriate hardware
  • exclusion material
  • correct size of one-way door

Procedure

Installing a one-way door:

  1. First, establish the correctly sized door for the type of animal we are excluding and the opening.
  2. Before installation, make sure that the one-way door is in good operating order and does not have any sharp edges that could harm the animal.
  3. The door should be placed right-side-up, so that the moving door moves upward when the animal passes through it.
  4. Install the door using the proper hardware. Make sure that it is secure, wildlife can be very strong and persistent when trying to get back into a structure.
    • If installing on a foundation vent, make sure to anchor the door to concrete.
    • If installing on wood, use enough screws so that the door does not move.
  5. Make sure there is enough room for the animal to get out past the end of the door.
  6. Once installed, double check the door to make sure that it is in good working order.

Removing a one-way door:

Typically, the one-way door will be removed 2 weeks after installation. If there are signs of wildlife remaining in the building, then the door should not be removed yet.

  1. Remove all screws anchoring the one-way door. Remove the door.
  2. Try to fill or conceal all screw holes left behind.
  3. Repair the hole or vent properly.
  4. Make sure that the repair is secure, wildlife will be persistent in trying to gain re-entry at this location.
